Prof. Lomba is a research professor at Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas– Instituto de Química Física Blas Cabrera (IQF), in Madrid, Spain. His main research field is in Theory and Computer Simulation of Liquids, with a keen interest in phase transitions and clustering processes in soft matter and biological physics, including the formation of stable finite and infinite aggregate phases (e.g. lamellar phases), and how these are conditioned by confinement. He took his PhD in Physical Chemistry back in 1988 from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid and he spent several years at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (Norway) and at the University of New York, Stony Brook (United States). He participated in 10 national projects (7 as PI), in one EU project, and he has been PI of two regional project consortia. He has supervised 10 doctoral students, (9 in Spain, one joint in Poland), 5 Masters students, and the vast majority of them continued careers in academic and research institutions in Spain (UPO, UPM, CEDEX) and abroad (Imperial College, Kärnten U, Chalmers TH, ILL, Union College-NY). From 2006-2013, he was Director of the IQFR-CSIC Institute, and Head of Research Group at IQF from 2001 to 2023. Currently, he is PI of the UVigo-IQF/CSIC Associated Research Unit. He has published more than 150 scientific articles (source: WOS), with an H-index 26 and approximately 3000 citations.
